What is Diflunisal?

Diflunisal is a generic NSAID (non-aspirin nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) that comes in tablet form, and it is used to relieve pain, swelling, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as mild to moderate pain caused by certain other health conditions. Diflunisal is also used to relieve mild to moderate pain from other causes. Diflunisal works by stopping the production of a substance in the body that are linked to inflammation.

How do I use Diflunisal?

Diflunisal tablets are to be taken orally, and this drug is typically prescribed to be taken once every 8 to 12 hours with water, milk, or food. Take care to swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush, chew, or split Diflunisal tablets. Consult with your doctor for information on how to use this drug, and follow your doctor’s instructions carefully for using Diflunisal.

Before using Diflunisal, tell your doctor if:

 
  • you are allergic to Diflunisal or any other medications

  • you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or nutritional or herbal supplements

  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

  • you have asthma

  • you frequently have a congested or runny nose or nasal polyps

  • you have swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs

  • you have liver disease or kidney disease

 

Additional precautions:

 
  • Contact your doctor if you think you may have a virus, and do not take this medication if  you have a virus.

  • Do not give this drug to a child who has a virus.

  • If you are having surgery, tell your doctor you are taking this medication.

What are the possible side effects of using Diflunisal?

 

Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:

  • diarrhea, gas, or constipation

  • headache or dizziness

  • vomiting

  • ringing in the ears

  • problems with vision

Contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • upset stomach

  • extreme fatigue

  • unusual bleeding or bruising

  • itching, rash, or blisters

  • loss of appetite

  • pain in the upper right part of the stomach

  • pale skin or yellowing of the skin or eyes

  • fever, chills, or flu-like symptoms

  • rapid heartbeat

  • easy bruising or bleeding

  • muscle pain or joint pain

  • unexplained weight gain

  • back pain

  • cloudy, discolored, or bloody urine

  • difficulty urinating or painful or frequent urination

  • swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs

  • difficulty swallowing or difficulty breathing

What if I forget to use a dose of Diflunisal?

 

Take your missed dose of Diflunisal as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

How do I store Diflunisal?

Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.

What happens if I overdose on Diflunisal?

 
 

In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.

 

Symptoms of overdose on Diflunisal may include:

 
  • drowsiness

  • vomiting

  • upset stomach

  • diarrhea

  • decreased urination

  • rapid breathing or a rapid heartbeat

  • sweating

  • confusion

  • ringing in the ears

  • coma

Warnings

 
  • Taking non-aspirin nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Diflunisal may increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke. Consult with your doctor regarding the risks associated with taking this medication.

  • Do not let anyone else take your medication.
