Clarithromycin Information:
What is clarithromycin?
Clarithromycin is a type of macrolide antibiotic. Drugs in this class kill bacteria, and clarithromycin may be prescribed to treat bacterial infections of the skin and respiratory system. It may also be used alongside other medications to treat stomach ulcers caused by the bacteria H. pylori. The clarithromycin medicine is not used to treat any kind of viral infection, such as a cold or flu virus.
How do I take clarithromycin?
Clarithromycin comes as an oral tablet that is usually taken twice a day with or without food (unless your doctor gives you different instructions). If you are prone to stomach upset, try taking your medication with food. It is best to take it at evenly spaced intervals, both to help you remember and to keep the amount of medicine in your body at a constant level. Continue to take this medication for the entire prescribed treatment period, even if you feel better. Stopping treatment with an antibiotic too soon may cause the infection to come back and to be more resistant to antibiotics.
Before taking clarithromycin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other antibiotics
- You have any other known allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements, especially cisapride, pimozide, lovastatin, simvastatin, ergotamine, or dihydroergotamine
- You have liver or kidney disease
- You have a muscle disease called myasthenia gravis
- You have low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood
- You have a genetic enzyme disorder called porphyria
- You are taking any medications for heart problems
- You have a family history of QT prolongation (a heart condition)
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking clarithromycin?
Some of the more common side effects of the clarithromycin drug include upset stomach, vomiting, mild skin or vaginal irritation, headache, difficulty sleeping, unpleasant taste in mouth, and mild diarrhea. If you have any side effects that become bothersome, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the following rare but serious side effects: difficulty hearing, difficulty urinating, severe skin rash, easy bleeding or bruising, numbness or tingling, muscle pain or weakness, watery or bloody diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, swollen glands, or headache accompanied by chest pain and severe dizziness. Get emergency medical attention if your experience an irregular heart rhythm, difficulty breathing, or severe dizziness.
What if I forget to take a dose of clarithromycin?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for another scheduled dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Never double your dose to catch up.
How do I store clarithromycin?
Keep clarithromycin medicine at room temperature, away from light and moisture and out of reach of children and pets. Never pour unused medicine down the drain or flush it down the toilet; if you no longer need this medication or it has expired, talk to your pharmacist about how to safely dispose of it.
What happens if I overdose on clarithromycin?
Overdosing on clarithromycin can cause severe nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or diarrhea. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or go to the nearest emergency room if side effects are serious.
Warnings
Because the clarithromycin drug can make bacterial vaccines less effective, you should not get any vaccinations during your course of treatment unless your doctor has given you permission to do so.
