Cefdinir Information:

What is cefdinir?

Cefdinir is an oral antibiotic from the cephalosporin class. It is used to treat ear infections and soft tissue infections such as strep throat, sinusitis, pneumonia, and some forms of bronchitis as well as other respiratory tract infections. Cefdinir and other cephalosporin antibiotics are derived from a fungus and work by disrupting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, leading to the destruction of the bacteria.

How do I take cefdinir?

Do not consume a food or product that contains magnesium, aluminum, or iron two hours before and after taking Cefdinir. This includes antacids. Cefdinir comes as a capsule or a liquid. Take this medication on a regular schedule as recommended by your doctor. Take your medication with milk or food to avoid an upset stomach. Doses vary depending on your infection, but a typical dosing schedule for cefdinir is twice daily for ten days. Do not stop taking this medication when you feel better. Finish the full course of medication prescribed by your doctor. If you stop taking cefdinir early, the infection could return and become resistant to the medication.

Before taking cefdinir, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any antibiotics, especially cefdinir and any of the ingredients in this medication.
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs and supplements, especially probenecid and vitamins.
  • You are taking antacids.
  • You have or have ever had diabetes, colitis or kidney disease.
  • You are pregnant or breast feeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking cefdinir?

Possible side effects from taking cefdinir include upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, headache and fatigue. Another possible but rare side effect is vaginal infection. Call you doctor if this occurs.

What if I forget to take a dose of cefdinir?

If you miss a dose of cefdinir, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose. You may have to take the medication for one extra day to finish the course prescribed by your doctor.

How do I store cefdinir?

Store cefdinir in its original container at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the container properly closed and away from children. Keep away from excess heat, moisture, and light. Throw away any expired medication.

What happens if I overdose on cefdinir?

Symptoms of overdose may include seizures, extreme nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, and vomiting. If you or someone you know has overdosed on cefdinir, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

Take the entire course of cefdinir prescribed by your doctor. Stopping the medication early could cause the infection to return and become resistant to this antibiotic.
