Avelox Information:

What is Avelox?

Avelox is the brand name of the drug moxifloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic prescribed to treat a number of bacterial illnesses including pneumonia, skin infections, sinus infections, bronchitis, and gastrointestinal infections brought on by bacteria. It may also be used to treat endocarditis, tuberculosis, anthrax, and bubonic plague. It works by killing the bacteria that cause infections; it is not effective against illnesses brought on by viruses.

How do I take Avelox?

Avelox is administered in tablet form to be taken orally once a day for five to twenty-one days, depending on the needs of the patient. Drink plenty of water and other fluids while taking Avelox, and continue to take the medication until the prescription is exhausted, even if you begin to feel well.

Before taking Avelox, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to moxifloxacin or any of the ingredients in the Avelox medicine
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are allergic to quinolone or fluoroquinolone antibiotics
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking NSAIDS, anticoagulants, antidepressant or antipsychotic medications, diuretics, or medications for arrhythmia
  • You are taking oral or injectable steroids
  • You are taking cisapride, erythromycin, sucralfate, or didanosine
  • You are taking antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, or vitamin supplements containing iron or zinc
  • You have, or have had, arrhythmia, nerve problems, prolonged QT, seizures, cerebral arterial sclerosis, chest pain, slow heartbeat, or low potassium levels
  • You have, or have had, liver or kidney disease
  • You have had an organ transplant

What are the possible side effects of taking Avelox?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking their Avelox medicine. Less severe symptoms include loss of appetite or changes in the ability to taste food, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, stomach pain, gas, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, headache, oral or lingual sores, white patches in the mouth, muscle weakness, or vaginal burning or itching. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include agitation, confusion, depression, sleep problems, dizziness, aural and visual hallucinations, nightmares, nervousness, paranoia, severe diarrhea, thoughts of suicide or self-harm, and uncontrollable tremors. However, do not stop taking Avelox without your doctor’s permission. If you experience any of the following, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor immediately: changes in urination output or darkened urine; signs of an allergic reaction; fainting or loss of consciousness; hoarseness; tachycardia; joint or muscle pain; symptoms of jaundice; seizures; unusual bruising or bleeding; or indications of a ruptured tendon or tendinitis.

What if I forget to take a dose of Avelox?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Avelox, take it as soon as you remember and are able unless it is close to the time for the next scheduled dose. In this instance, forego the one missed and resume the normal dosing schedule. Do not take multiple doses to compensate for the one missed.

How do I store Avelox?

Keep Avelox tightly sealed in its original container or packaging, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Discuss with your pharmacist the correct method for disposing of any unused or expired doses of this medication.

What happens if I overdose on Avelox?

If an overdose of Avelox is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or has lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
