Adacel Information:
What is Adacel?
Adacel is the tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine and is administered to prevent these bacterial diseases from developing in people 10 years of age and older. It is usually administered only once; however, it may also be administered to women during any pregnancies to protect the fetus from contracting pertussis. The Adacel drug works to help the body develop an immunity to these diseases by exposing it to small doses of the bacteria or a protein in the bacteria. It will not treat an active infection.
How do I take Adacel?
Adacel is administered via intramuscular injection in a medical setting.
Before taking Adacel, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any medications or have had an allergic reaction to other vaccines or to Adacel
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have a fever or are not feeling well on the day of the vaccination
- You have a nervous system disorder such as epilepsy
- You have had severe pain or swelling after any vaccination, or you had a coma as a result of a childhood dose of Adacel
- You have Guillain-Barre Syndrome
What are the possible side effects of taking Adacel?
Some side effects are possible after receiving Adacel; these include feeling faint, headache, nausea, mild or moderate fever, vomiting, diarrhea, swollen glands, stomach ache, chills, fatigue, pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site. If they appear and persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Severe side effects such as an allergic reaction or severe swelling, bleeding, or pain at the injection site require immediate medical attention.
What if I forget to take a dose of Adacel?
Adacel is typically administered only once. However, if you miss your appointment, or a follow-up dose, contact your doctor to reschedule.
How do I store Adacel?
The Adacel drug is stored at a healthcare facility.
What happens if I overdose on Adacel?
Because Adacel is administered in a healthcare setting, an overdose is unlikely.
Warnings
Do not receive this medication if you are not feeling well or have had an allergic reaction to previous Adacel or other Tdap injections. Talk with your doctor about any potential risks associated with this vaccine.
