What is Absorica?
Absorica the brand name for the medication isotretinoin, an anti-acne retinoid that is prescribed to treat severe, disfiguring nodular acne, but only after other medications have been tried and failed. How do I take Absorica?
Absorica dispensed in capsule form and is taken orally, two times a day with meals. The capsule is swallowed whole, with a full glass of water; do not break, bite, suck, or chew the capsule. Treatment typically lasts four to five months.

- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or nursing a child

- You or a family member have, or have had, heart or liver disease
What are the possible side effects of taking Absorica?
Some patients have reported side effects after taking Absorica. Less severe side effects include swollen or bleeding gums, changes in skin color, changes to finger or toenails, cold symptoms, dry skin, dry or irritated eyes, mouth, or nose, flushing or sweating, hair loss or growth, nosebleeds, skin peeling from the palms or soles, cuts or sores that heal slowly, fatigue, red or cracked and sore lips, voice changes. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Serious side effects have also been reported. If you experience any of the following, contact your doctor immediately: blurred or other vision problems, changes in urine color or frequency of urination, pain in the joints, muscles, or back; chest pain; hearing problems; stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, pain or difficulty swallowing; fainting, dizziness, or disorientation; tachycardia or arrhythmia; fever, headache, weak or tired muscles; symptoms of jaundice; signs of an allergic reaction, including swelling of the lips, face, mouth, throat, or tongue, hives, rash, or itching; blistering or peeling skin, swollen, watering, or itchy eyes, dry or painful eyes, tinnitus, seizures, heartburn (new or worsening); slow, slurred, or difficult speech; sores appearing on the eyes or in the mouth or throat; unusual thirst; psychosis, sudden bursts of violence, anxiety, crying spells, diminished performance at school or work, or changes to sleeping patterns.
What if I forget to take a dose of Absorica?
If a scheduled dose of Absorica is missed, skip it completely and resume the regimen with the next scheduled dose. Do not take multiple doses to compensate for the one missed.
How do I store Absorica?
Keep Absorica tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children, and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the liquid-filled capsules to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired doses in accordance with the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Absorica?
If an overdose of Absorica is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. However, if the patient has lost consciousness or stopped breathing, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include dizziness, flushing, headache, loss of coordination, severe chapped lips, stomach pain, or vomiting.
Warnings
Absorica can terminate a pregnancy, harm a developing fetus, or result in death of a child soon after birth. If you are of childbearing age, even if you have not begun menstruating, you must take strident measures to prevent pregnancy, using two acceptable forms of birth control beginning one month before treatment begins, and then during, and for one month after treatment ends. You must have two negative pregnancy tests before treatment with Absorica can commence. Contact your physician immediately if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Do not breast-feed while taking Absorica, or for one month following the end of treatment. Do not donate blood while taking this drug and for one month after treatment ends. Do not share this medication with anyone. Absorica prescriptions are not refillable; a visit with a doctor is required before a prescription can be renewed. Males using Absorica must inform their doctor if their partner becomes pregnant during the treatment period. Absorica may cause thoughts of suicide. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight while taking this medication. This medication may diminish the ability to see in the dark; do not drive or use heavy machinery or power tools until the effects are known. This medication may cause changes to bone density.

In addition to Absorica, isotretinoin is available under other brand names, including Claravis, Sotret, Myorisan, and Amnesteem.
