Methylprednisolone Dose Pack Information:

What is methylprednisolone?

Methylprednisolone is a corticosteroids prescribed to treat a large variety of conditions that involve inflammation or decreased adrenal function. Methylprednisolone works as a strong substitute for steroid hormones that are naturally produced by your adrenal glands to reduce inflammation. This medication is commonly prescribed to treat inflammation from arthritis. Methylprednisolone is a glucocorticoid that regulates glucose metabolism and immune system activity. For this reason it is also used to treat autoimmune diseases, cancer, asthma, and allergic reactions. Methylprednisolone is also sometimes used to treat swelling from hemorrhoids.

How do I take methylprednisolone?

Methylprednisolone can be bought from your local pharmacy as a dose pack or tablets. To get methylprednisolone at a reduced price, search for our coupons. This medication is often sold in a dose pack because it is necessary to taper off the use of this medication.  The methylprednisolone dose pack contains tablets arranged to follow the order of the dosing schedule and contains smaller and smaller doses towards the end. Take this medication orally with a full glass of water. Follow the instructions and dosing schedule provided by your doctor. Do not abruptly discontinue the use of this medication. Serious side effects may ensue.

Before taking methylprednisolone, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
  • You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine including aspirin, herbal preparation, vitamins or dietary supplement.
  • You have a history of bleeding problems, heart disease or problems (congestive heart failure, recent heart attack), high blood pressure, kidney disease or problems, liver problems (cirrhosis), low blood potassium levels, diabetes, seizures, an underactive or overactive thyroid, adrenal gland problems, fluid retention (swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet), or any mental or mood problems.
  • You have recently had a fungal, bacterial, viral, or other type of infection, eye problems (herpes of the eye, glaucoma, cataracts), chickenpox, measles, or shingles.
  • You have HIV infection or tuberculosis, or you have ever had a positive TB skin test.
  • You have any stomach problems such as ulcers, intestinal problems (blockage, perforation, infection, unexplained diarrhea, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis), or inflammation of the esophagus, or you have had recent intestinal surgery.
  • You have weak bones (osteoporosis) or muscle problems (myasthenia gravis).
  • You have had any recent vaccinations, especially for smallpox.
  • You are allergic to methylprednisolone, aspirin, yellow dye or any other drugs.

Your stomach is more vulnerable to the effects alcohol, aspirin, and some arthritis medications while taking methylprednisolone. It also increases your likelihood of developing ulcers. Limit your alcohol consumption and ask your doctor how much is safe if you are prone to developing ulcers, or you are using aspirin or arthritis medication.  Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking this medication. Do not get live vaccines while taking methylprednisolone as the immune system may be too weak to handle it.

What are the possible side effects of taking methylprednisolone?

Side effects from taking methylprednisolone for a short-term are rare but may include flushing, allergic reaction, changes in menstruation, mental or mood changes, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, sweating, changes in vision, swelling of the feet or legs and stomach pain. These are not all the possible side effects from methylprednisolone. Talk to your doctor about side effects.

If using methylprednisolone long-term, side effects include those of most corticosteroids: hyperglycemia decreased immune function, facial swelling, weight gain, congestive heart failure, fluid and sodium retention, edema, high blood pressure, increased eye pressure, glaucoma, and osteoporosis. Abrupt cessation of the use of methylprednisolone after adrenal dependence occurs can result in Addison crisis (adrenal crisis), which can be fatal.

What if I forget to take a dose of methylprednisolone?

If you miss a dose of methylprednisolone and you only take it once a day, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If a long period of time has passed, or it’s almost time for your next dose, contact your doctor for instructions. You may be advised to miss the dose or take an extra dose. Do not take double doses of this medication without consulting your health care professional.

How do I store methylprednisolone?

Store methylprednisolone at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep it tightly closed in the container it came in and out of reach of children. Throw away any expired medication.

What happens if I overdose on methylprednisolone?

An overdose on methylprednisolone is typically not fatal and does not produce fatal symptoms. Signs of overdose may include dizziness, fainting, nausea, fever, muscle pain and possibly seizures. If you or someone you know has overdosed on methylprednisolone, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or contact 911 emergency services.
