Leuprolide Information:

Leuprolide is a man-made hormone that temporarily halts the production of testosterone in men and estrogen in women. When prescribed to men with prostate cancer, it helps to slow the growth of cancer cells and may relieve certain cancer-related symptoms, such as painful urination. It can also help treat an overgrowth of the uterine lining or uterine fibroids in women, or early-onset puberty in boys and girls.

Your doctor may inject this medicine for you or instruct you how to self-inject it at home. If you don’t fully understand the instructions for self-injection, talk to your doctor. Inject leuprolide under your skin on a schedule that your doctor will determine based on your condition.

Before using leuprolide, tell your doctor if:

·       You have any food or drug allergies

·       You are taking any other medications, supplements, or vitamins

·       You have any heart problems

·       You have high cholesterol or high blood pressure

·       You have diabetes

·       You have risk factors for bone loss

·       You have an electrolyte imbalance

·       You have kidney disease

·       You have a history of migraines

·       You have a history of depression

·       You have bone cancer

·       You have blood in your urine or are unable to urinate

The changes in hormone levels from leuprolide may lead to certain side effects, including breakthrough menstrual bleeding, vaginal itching, weight gains, problems with urination, hot flashes, acne, rash, or decreased testicle size. Other possible side effects include mild injection site irritation, stomach discomfort, joint pain, headache, or flu-like symptoms. Call your doctor immediately if you experience bone pain, painful urination, a slow heart rate, weak pulse, vomiting, confusion, sudden chest pain, wheezing, dry cough, or pain, burning, or stinging at the injection site. Get emergency medical attention if you have signs of a heart attack or stroke.

It’s important not to miss any doses. If you do miss an injection, call your doctor to find out what to do.

Check the leuprolide product packaging for storage instructions. Don’t allow this medication to freeze.  After using a disposable needle, throw it away in a puncture-proof container (ask your doctor where you can get one). Don’t leave your medication anywhere that children could reach.

Seek emergency medical attention right away if you or someone in your home overdoses on the leuprolide drug.

Warnings

Leuprolide can pass into your body fluids, so don’t let any of these fluids come into contact with your hands or any surfaces for at least 48 hours after an injection. Make sure the prescription you receive at the pharmacy matches the prescription your doctor has written; certain brands and strengths of leuprolide are only intended to treat men.

Brand Names

Leuprolide is a generic drug but is also marketed under the brand names Lupron and Eligard. Do not exchange one product for another without written medical permission from your doctor. Remember to get a HelpRx coupon to save on leuprolide or any of its brand name alternatives.
