What is Ethosuximide?

 

Ethosuximide is a generic anticonvulsant drug that comes in capsule and liquid syrup form, and it is used to control absence seizures, or petit mal seizures. Petit mal is a type of seizure during which the person having the seizure experiences a very short loss of awareness. During the seizure, the person may stare straight ahead or blink his eyes and not respond to other people. This drug works by reducing abnormal activity in the brain.

How do I use Ethosuximide?

 

Ethosuximide capsules and liquid syrup are to be taken orally, and this medication is typically prescribed to be taken one or more times per day. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully for using this medication.

 

Do not stop taking this medication without first consulting with your doctor, even if you experience side effects such as unusual changes in behavior or mood, as stopping this drug suddenly may cause your seizures to worsen.

Before using Ethosuximide, tell your doctor if:

 
  • you are allergic to Ethosuximide or any other medications

  • you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • you have or have ever had kidney or liver disease

  • you have or have ever had mental illness

  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

 

Additional precautions:

 
  • This drug may cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol while using this drug, as alcohol may increase the drowsiness effect of Ethosuximide.

  • This drug may cause your mental health to change unexpectedly and you may become suicidal. You, your family, or your caregiver should call your doctor right away if you experience any of the following symptoms:

 
  • panic attacks, agitation, irritability, or restlessness

  • anxiety or depression

  • Insomnia

  • aggressive, angry, or violent behavior

  • mania

  • expressing suicidal thoughts or thoughts of hurting yourself

  • withdrawing from friends and family

  • preoccupation with death and dying

  • any other unusual changes in behavior or mood

What are the possible side effects of using Ethosuximide?

 

Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:

  • headache, nausea, or vomiting

  • diarrhea

  • stomach pain or stomach cramps

  • loss of appetite

  • weight loss

  • swelling of the tongue

  • overgrowth of the gums

  • hiccups

  • drowsiness

  • dizziness

  • suddenly awakening from sleep in a frightened state

  • trouble concentrating

  • hair growth in unusual places

  • near-sightedness

  • vaginal bleeding

Contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • signs of infection including sore throat, fever, and chills

  • joint pain or muscle pain

  • swelling

  • red, itchy rash, especially on the face

  • hives or blisters

  • fever (with unknown cause)

What if I forget to use a dose of Ethosuximide?

 

Take your missed dose of Ethosuximide as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

How do I store Ethosuximide?

 

Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.

What happens if I overdose on Ethosuximide?

 

In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.

 

Symptoms of overdose on Ethosuximide may include:

 
  • nausea or vomiting

  • slowed breathing

  • decreased alertness

  • coma
