How can I manage prostate and bladder problems?

Managing Prostate Infections

To improve prostate health, in combination of exercise and medication can be used.  Although antibiotics are an appropriate prostate medication for some types of infections, it may take an extended amount of time to find the correct antibiotic.  Generally, antibiotics are prescribed for a minimum of two weeks, but can be used for up to four weeks.  In cases where antibiotic treatment is ineffective, your doctor may prescribe a variety of antibiotics to find one that can resolve the problem.  If the condition becomes chronic, prostate drugs may be required for up to 12 weeks.

Managing Kidney Stones

While kidney stones are often very painful, not all of them require prescription strength kidney stone medication.  Instead, less severe kidney stones can be managed with pain medication and the intake of fluids.  Sometimes your doctor will prescribe medication to help pass the stone more easily.  Kidney stone medication used for this purpose seeks to dissolve the stone or increase flow through the urethra.  In extreme cases, such as where the kidneys stone is blocking the urethra or if there is an infection, your doctor may prescribe more drastic measures such as surgery to remove the stone.

Managing Overactive Bladder

Assuming there’s no infection or surgical procedure necessary, doctors generally treat overactive bladder using a series of different stages.  The first stage is altering lifestyle choices, such as reducing the intake of fluids and limiting the consumption of caffeinated and carbonated beverages.  Additionally, exercise may be recommended to strengthen muscles and reduce the frequency of urination.  If these changes alone are insufficient to elicit sufficient treatment, overactive bladder medication may be prescribed.  This medication can help reduce the urge to urinate.  Overactive bladder medication can also include antibiotic treatment if an infection it is present.  Your doctor may also recommend discontinuing medications that can cause overactive bladder such as cold and allergy medication.

What are the different types of medication for prostate and bladder health?

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are used to treat a variety of bladder and prostate infections.  They can be prescribed for a range of time from 2 to 12 weeks depending on the severity in longevity of the infection.  Because these infections tend to reoccur, one antibiotic may not always be effective against the different infections.  Instead, you may be prescribed a variety of different antibiotic medications so that the infection is cleared.  The most common side effects of antibiotic medications are nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Painkillers

Because many bladder and prostate problems can create significant discomfort even during treatment, many doctors will prescribe painkillers to enhance the quality of life during this process.  These are especially used when passing a kidney stone. The stone should naturally resolve itself, but the process can be a painful one.

What are the symptoms of bladder and prostate problems?

The most common symptom of bladder or prostate irritation is unusual urination.  If you notice that you are urinating more frequently, or have the desire to urinate more frequently, an infection may be present.  Contact your doctor immediately if you notice blood in your urine or if you are unable to urinate.  The symptoms of these problems can range from intense pain to no noticeable effect.  Because of this, it is important to schedule and keep regular appointments with your doctor so that he/she can check as to whether an asymptomatic infection has occurred.
