Cialis and Viagra are both drugs that are administered in oral tablet form to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). Erectile dysfunction is the inability to achieve and maintain an erection that is firm enough for sex. This is an extremely common issue, affecting as many as 30 million men in the USA.

Both drugs are PDE5 inhibitors. They work by blocking an enzyme in the body known as phosphodiesterase type 5. This, in turn, increases the amount of nitric oxide (NO) in the blood - a chemical which is only released during sexual arousal. The combination of these actions can help with erectile dysfunction, allowing an erection to happen by relaxing muscles in the penis and increasing blood flow. It is important to note that an erection will not occur just by taking a pill - it simply increases the ease of getting an erection when the patient is aroused. Both drugs have been shown to help men get an erection after suffering from erectile dysfunction when they are used as prescribed.
Both Cialis and Viagra are commonly prescribed to men of all ages - you may know them by the generic names of tadalafil and sildenafil, but there are currently no generic versions of either drug. However, a generic version of Viagra is expected in late 2017. If you are having difficulty paying for either drug, be sure to check out our coupons page. They may also be prescribed to treat an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hypertrophy).
The drugs are very similar but have a few important differences that consumers should be conscious of. The main difference between the two drugs is the amount of time they stay in the body and affect the ability to get an erection. While Viagra’s effects generally last for around 4-5 hours, the effect of Cialis can last for 36 hours. The time taken for the drugs to take effect is similar, and the effects of both of the drugs depend on how they are prescribed.
Cialis is prescribed in one of two ways. The first is as needed, 30 minutes prior to sexual activity. If prescribed for this “as needed” use, the initial dose is usually 10mg. Cialis can also be prescribed for use once a day. In this case, the initial dose is usually prescribed as 2.5mg. Viagra’s shorter effect means that it cannot be prescribed for once a day use - it is only prescribed as needed and usually has an initial dose of 50mg. Cialis and Viagra should not be used more than once per day.
The doses of both drugs may change after the initial dose based on individual efficacy and tolerability. This is known as the maintenance dose - every patient is different. Some may need less of the drug in order for it to take effect the first time a patient takes it, and some may need more. Typically, maintenance doses for an “as needed” prescription of Cialis are between 5 and 20mg, to be taken once a day as needed. Maintenance doses for a “once a day” prescription of Cialis are between 2.5 and 5mg. Viagra (which is only taken “as needed”) has maintenance doses between 25 and 100mg. You should always take Cialis and Viagra exactly as your doctor prescribes.
Common side effects of Cialis can include (but are not limited to) flushing, headaches, aches, and pains in the body, nausea, dizziness, issues with vision and an uncomfortable feeling in the top of the stomach (also known as dyspepsia). Other side effects can include (but are not limited to) nasal congestion, nosebleeds, and sneezing. Most of these effects are due to the dilation of blood vessels around the body.
Cialis can interact with other drugs and has been shown to interact differently with various diseases. The most serious of these are cardiovascular disease, renal dysfunction, and pulmonary disease, but there are also interactions with priapism, alcoholism, hearing loss, liver disease, retinitis pigmentosa and a number of seizure disorders. Consult your doctor before taking Cialis if you have any of these diseases. Also consult your doctor if you are currently taking any other medicines, especially amlodipine, hydrochlorothiazide, lisinopril or tamsulosin.
Viagra has similar side effects and interactions. Common side effects of Viagra can include (but are not limited to) flushing, headaches, aches, and pains in the body, and visual disturbance. Other side effects can include (but are not limited to) nasal congestion and difficulty sleeping.

Both Cialis and Viagra interact with alcohol - if you plan to use either of the drugs while drinking alcohol, consult your doctor first. If you have an erection that lasts longer than four hours, call your doctor immediately.
Although neither Cialis or Viagra have the potential to cause addiction, they are both commonly misused - often without a prescription. Because of the serious side effects that can occur with erectile dysfunction, it is important that you consult your doctor and are issued a prescription before taking Cialis or Viagra.
